Jefferson, Texas
Jefferson, situated in the north east corner of Texas, not far from Caddo Lake, is a delightful town with brick paved streets, lovely colonial homes and gardens with large magnolia trees lining the neighbourhood. Jefferson's role in the Civil War was as a manufacturing and supply depot. This year marks the 150th anniversary of that time and the town will fill with re-enactors for many events including a Grand Ball and battles. Unfortunately we couldn't stay long enough for this. A highlight for us was a visit to the Jefferson General Store, serving the town as a general and hardware store since the 1870's. One can put a nickel in the juke box, sip on a Root Beer Float (which I did) and play a game of checkers and cool yore heels, or have a cup of 5c coffee. Opening hours are "from when we open till we get tired and close".
